It is said that learning a language like Hungarian can be an invaluable asset to your critical thinking and problem-solving skills, but people learn Hungarian for a variety of reasons! In addition to the numerous benefits of being bilingual or multilingual (including higher salaries, better job opportunities and increased travel opportunities) learning Hungarian offers its benefits. If you are wondering how to learn Hungarian so that you can travel, you are in for a treat as one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe with an incredible history and beautiful architecture. It also has a rich folk tradition of music and dance. Enjoy!
Learning Hungarian might seem like a huge task, but at Language Services Direct we are experts in language training, so we’re here to help. Here are our top tips on how to learn Hungarian. (In order!)
It is very important to know your why when learning any foreign language. This will determine how committed you are to your learning and your motivation to keep up with the language in the long run. If you don’t know why you want to learn a certain language, then it’s time to step back and re-evaluate your motives. It is easy to get overwhelmed by all of the vocabulary and grammar that one might encounter when learning a new language like Hungarian. Therefore, it can be very helpful for people who are looking to learn Hungarian to have a reason why they want to do so. Whether it’s for family or a friend, to travel or for work, take a note of why you want to learn and keep it close.
Learning a new language can be overwhelming. In order to effectively learn another language, it is important to start with the basics. The alphabet and numbers are absolutely essential to learning another language, so we recommend you start with them. It is important not to jump ahead of yourself before you have a good grasp of the basics, as this will only result in confusion or failure when trying to speak or write in the new language.
To continue from our previous tip, we recommend learning the most common, basic Hungarian words next. When learning a new language, it is important to learn the most common words and phrases first. Learning basic words like “yes” or “no”, and how to ask and answer simple questions will help you with more difficult conversations as you progress further in your studies. Even though it may be exciting for learners to begin their language lessons with something more exciting, there is value in learning the simple words and phrases of a language first.
Print references and have them to hand! It’s okay to need that bit of extra support when learning to speak Hungarian. We recommend printing your alphabet, numbers and basic words and phrases (or buying a handy Hungarian reference dictionary) and keeping them to hand for when you need them. Remind yourself that these are simply for reference, not to be relied upon for the entire spoken language but to allow you to look up individual words or phrases that you might need in a pinch!
Using the basic words and phrases you have learnt, you now need to prepare for the nuances of normal conversation. Use common conversation starters and their responses to craft conversation scripts that you can practice in the lead up to your Hungarian travel or work commitments. This could include your name, age, job, family, where you live and should naturally progress from there. The more scripts you can write (and practice!) the better at Hungarian you will get before you go!
If you only need to learn the basics for short-term travel (for work or other commitments) then your needs will naturally be different to those who are looking to move to Hungary and learn Hungarian before they go. No matter what your needs and goals are, your learning should be suited to them. Language isn’t a one size fits all, there are complex nuances when it comes to learning and they need to be accounted for. Remember this when studying, or find a class that will work to your specific needs and prepare you for all the right conversations.
Now that you’ve found your motivation, covered the basics, got references to hand and a basic grip of the Hungarian language, you need to actually speak it! Practice at any chance you get. Immerse yourself in Hungarian as often as possible. That includes books, films, practising conversations, this may even be the point that you move and start to practice with Hungarians themselves! Whatever it is you do, practice makes perfect! Keep practising until you feel comfortable enough to achieve your needs and goals.
